The Bird and the Bee cd packaging

by student designer Michael Miller, this CD packaging for the Bird and the Bee is super clever looking.
It’s Designed (by us) Do Blind People Dream

Do Blind People Dream, and if They Do, Do they Dream in Colour?
Alot of thought went into this DVD cover made to explore the idea of blind dreaming or the dreaming blind.
On the outside cover is the phrase “Do Blind People Dream” written in both standard typography and braille cutouts.
Bright colours from the inside of the case are exposed through the braille lettering which is understandable only by the blind (or those who can touch read). The irony being that the blind cannot see this colour shining through the forms of their written language.
Meanwhile the regular typography, which only the sited can read, is a muted, dull colour in comparison. A reversal of roles perhaps? Or perhaps not. Perhaps the blind ‘see’ more than the sighted with their senses.
For this reason the case has a dark then bright, ‘night and day’ effect going from the cover to the inside because who really knows what the blind dream like… maybe they have a more freed version of reality than we know..perhaps a lesser…

In the background of the outside cover, bending lines simulate a sense of the science behind sight (light rays bouncing and reflecting) maybe even connotations of sound and spacial elements.. echolocation..everything being vibrations not limited by our senses?

If you are interested in the topic of how the blind “see” images and pictures, this segment of a book discussing the drawings of blind people might interest you.

Mikey Burton did an amazing graphic representations on classic books. Have a look.
I love these. I want these. It’s great to take these books and refresh them. Truthfully, if animal farm was written now, I think it would have been designed this way. It fits. Its bold. Its designed!

Scrabble packaging redesign concept by Matt McInerney
(follow up to earlier post)This is the follow up to my previous post about redesigning the Scrabble logo. This is the entire academic project: my concept for redesigning the Scrabble packaging. My design strips away the need for a box to hold your board and instead turns the package into the product. This new Scrabble board functions more like a book, featuring the logo and instructions on the outside, with a board on the inside that’s revealed as you open the package. The two pieces/boxes that make up the package and board are hollow and features tabs at the top that can be opened. This is where you’ll find your Scrabble pieces and tiles. To keep the package shut, I embedded two magnets in the material on opposite sides of the board.
The new package is only about 10 inches tall, so it can fit comfortably on a bookshelf, no need to stack it on top of or underneath other board games. This package also cuts down on materials used to make the game. There’s no need to put a box or slip around this, the cover serves as a display for the product on store shelves. If you’d like to see higher quality photos of the project you can check them out on flickr.
This is classic looking, yet modern at the same time. The product = packaging concept is something i always love, and in this instance is seemless. Was watching some family play scrabble just this week on a 20 year old board, because it’s the type of thing you have & keep for years, pulling it out when the power goes off or on stays at a beach house. I’d like my family scrabble board to be this one. Too back it’s just an academic project and not live. Scrabble should totally buy this.
swissmiss | Love What You Do And it just so happens that I LOVE this poster as well. Totally sucessful at standing out as a poster, breaking the mold of what format a poster should take. negative space, diecut and bold typography. <3
