Happy ‘Buy Nothing Day’!!! (November 27th for those outside North America)
Most in the United States know of the Friday after Thanksgiving as “Black Friday”, a day of mass-consumerism resulting from retailer’s lowered pricing for the christmas ‘shopping-season’. This long-standing tradition among American shoppers is a major contributor to what is known as a ‘five-planet lifestyle’. The term comes from the estimated number of planets that would be needed if everyone in the world consumed the amount that an average American consumes. Black Friday is a tradition that encourages the exploitation of our planet. This is a tradition that we, as citizens of the world, cannot afford to carry on. ‘Buy Nothing Day’ is a day to break ourselves from this tradition. To waste not. To want not. To be thankful for what we have.
